Curriculum E-Safety
All students at The City of Leicester College are taught how to stay safe online. Using our ambitious academic and co-curriculum students learn about the risks they might face online from any harmful content, contact, conduct and commerce and what steps they can take to keep themselves safer online.
When a student uses one of our school computers either at home or in school our robust filtering and monitoring systems will immediately detect and alert the ICT Manager and Designated Safeguarding Lead to any harmful online content. This excellent standard of filtering and monitoring means that we block websites, acting quickly to prevent students being exposed to harmful online content and support those students who might use the internet to search subjects that may pose risk to themselves or others.
The City of Leicester College has a responsibility to provide a safe learning environment for students, including when online. effective filtering and monitoring systems are both important when safeguarding students from potentially harmful and inappropriate online material. Filtering restricts access to online content, while monitoring allows user activity to be reviewed.
In meeting our responsibility we follow Government provided guidance and standards.
The Governing Body, Senior Leadership Team and Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) has overall responsibility for safeguarding, online safety and ensuring we meet the Government standards, working closely with the Strategic Information Lead (Extended SLT), the ICT Manager and the IT Management service provider, Capita. All systems and procedures are reviewed annually.
The City of Leicester College uses a range of industry standard filtering and monitoring systems, including:
Lightspeed: - an internet-based filtering software that protects students from inappropriate content on college devices i.e. laptops and desktops, both in and out of school.
Smoothwall: - a key command monitoring software for Windows devices. This monitors what students type in via the keyboard. This protection occurs on college-based devices including work from home devices. Alerts are sent to the Helpdesk where we monitor and review and forward to the appropriate safeguarding team.
Sophos: - our anti-virus and cybersecurity protection system which detects and removes viruses and other types of malicious software on the college devices.
LightSpeed Mobile Device Management: - for iPads only, enables the tracking of mobile devices, remote App management and applies policies in real time.
Apple School Manager: - for iPads only, enables access management control to the App store.
NetSupport: - live screen monitoring software of Windows-based devices in school (i.e. desktops, laptops etc). All teachers have access to this software and can monitor and/or lock down student devices as needed.
Office365: - provides functionality to deal with suspicious emails. Automatically identifies and blocks users sending high numbers of emails. Blocks inappropriate language being sent by email. Blocka spam emails from being received into inboxes.
KCOM / emPSN: - are our Internet Service Providers who filter the traffic that is being passed through the college. Any suspicious traffic is blocked by our firewalls and prevented from accessing the networks.
As per government guidance on meeting the standards, all our filtering and monitoring systems, are members of the Internet Watch Foundation.
Below is a list of websites that curriculum subjects regularly use and recommend as part of their teaching to support students ambitious learning. All websites have been evaluated from a safeguarding perspective and are appropriate in terms of the subject content, the minimal opportunity for contact with others, the conduct and behaviour of others and risk of commerce such as online gambling and/or advertising.
